Speaking to Nichal Sarawan on Radio Al-Ansaar, Stefan Schirmer, CDE’s research director shared insights on the challenges and factors to improving the education system in South Africa. He said, “The President looks at the matric results and says positive things are happening and 80% of children are passing, but the problems happen long before that. The real issue is 80 percent of our learners cannot read for meaning by the time they finish grade four.”
