South Africa cannot afford a basic income grant
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on Newzroom Afrika, Ann Bernstein discussed CDE’s latest report titled Poverty and a Basic Income Grant: Six questions about a BIG. She said, “The basic income grant could cost – depending on who would benefit, how much money they would get, and their different proposals – around R200 to R300 billion every year and you have to ask where this would come from? So if you raise it from taxes it would affect our debt ratio and the fiscal situation.”
