• Sir Mick Davis, chairman of Macsteel, spoke to CDE’s executive director Ann Bernstein about business, politics and society.
  • Mick Davis believes that in a country like South Africa that has challenging governance and other existential issues, business needs to step forward, engage politically and be seen as a force for public good.
  • According to him “one of the biggest challenges for South Africa is that the government believes it has to be at the epicentre of the economic and social system. Governments should instead create the environment in which society – including businesses – can focus on adding value.”
  • He urged business to be “robust in its debates with government and challenge the ideology that underpins government’s determination to control the economy”.
