Focus on special economic zones

Sharing her views with eNCA’s Devan Murugan, CDE’s Ann Bernstein discussed the potential special economic zones have to create labour intensive employment in South Africa. “South Africa needs economy wide innovation and we’re proposing that we use the infrastructure and the underutilised port of Coega in Nelson Mandela Bay for a policy reform zone. What we need is lots of jobs for labour intensive factories to absorb our enormous unemployment rate,” she said.

This media interview is based on a new CDE report, ‘What if SA had a special economic zone that was actually special?’
