CDE is hosting a series of webinars on the informal sector. Each event will be led by a world-renowned expert and will seek to uncover the most effective way to strengthen small, mostly informal firms with growth potential. How can these firms become engines of economic inclusion and job creation in South Africa?
Please join us for a discussion on how cities can generate growth, inclusion and entrepreneurship. What barriers hold entrepreneurs back in our Metros, and what needs to be done to accelerate growth in the wake of Covid-19?

Speakers
The discussion will be led by Professor Ed Glaeser. Professor Glaeser is one of the world’s leading economists writing on urban issues, including the growth of cities, segregation, crime and housing markets. He sees urbanisation as a path to prosperity and is particularly interested in the role that geographic proximity can play in creating knowledge, facilitating innovation and lifting millions out of poverty. He is author of Triumph of the City: How our greatest invention makes us richer, smarter, greener, healthier and happier.
South African urban experts, practitioners and city officials will respond to Professor Glaeser’s presentation. We are currently confirming the panel, and the following speakers have indicated their availability:
• Benjamin Manasoe, Head: Economic Development, City of Tshwane
• Hugh Cole, Director: Organisational Policy and Planning, City of Cape Town
