Localisation will not solve the country’s economic challenges
Speaking with Metro FM DJ Siphesihle ‘Sphectacula’ Ngwenya, Ann Bernstein shared insights from the latest CDE report focusing on localisation and how the Governments strategy on this matter is misguided. “Localisation sounds like such a good idea, we have got 12 million unemployed people, why can’t we produce more here and reduce imports. The problem is there is no free lunch and there are enormous costs from doing this,” she said. She further touched on a South Africa being a competitive economy, the need to fix the rail system and electricity crisis.
This interview is based on CDE’s latest report: “The Siren Song of Localisation: Why localisation policy will not lead to industrialisation.”
