Energise the NPA
For South Africa to realise its full potential, we must implement critical reforms that drive broader change. At the heart of recovery from widespread corruption and economic stagnation lies the rule of law. Unfortunately, a weak National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has allowed criminality to flourish, corruption to go largely unchecked, and public trust in the state’s ability to enforce the law to diminish.
On 26th September 2024, CDE launched its latest report, ACTION FIVE: Energise the NPA, as part of the AGENDA 2024: Priorities for South Africa’s new government series. This event focused on the urgent need to strengthen the NPA and explored actionable solutions to restore its effectiveness.
Moderated by business leader and CDE board member Sipho Nkosi, the event featured CDE executive director Ann Bernstein presenting key findings and recommendations. A distinguished panel of experts shared their insights:
- Halton Cheadle: Professor Emeritus, UCT & Co-author of the CDE report
- Justice Johann Kriegler: Former Constitutional Court Judge & Former IEC Chair
- Terry Motau SC: Senior Counsel, Johannesburg Bar
- Neeshan Balton: Executive Director, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation
