Hands Off Pravin

The decision of the Hawks to issue a summons to Pravin Gordhan is a desperate move. It is a transparent attempt to create a seemingly defensible basis for the president to remove Mr Gordhan as finance minister and replace him with someone more pliable. If Mr Gordhan is replaced by a more pliant finance minister, there will be disastrous consequences for all South Africans. The Treasury is one of the country’s great democratic achievements which people at the heart of government are determined to undermine so as to facilitate increased looting of public funds.

CDE calls for concerted action by leaders from across society, including senior leaders in the ruling party, parliament, the Cabinet and business, to divert the President from his chosen path.
