Ann Bernstein challenges Chief Justice Maya to prioritize judicial excellence
CDE executive director Ann Bernstein is urging the new Chief Justice, Mandisa Maya, to take an active role in reforming the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to ensure that the country’s top legal talent is appointed as judges. Bernstein emphasises that the appointing bodies are not sufficiently considering the calibre of individuals needed on the JSC to make these crucial selections. She calls on the Chief Justice to demonstrate strong leadership in overseeing the JSC’s processes. This interview comes after the release of CDE’s new publication titled “Action Four: How to appoint a strong judiciary”
