An overview of special economic zones in South Africa

Speaking with Power FM’s Khaya Sithole, Ann Bernstein discussed the new CDE report on how South Africa can make special economic zones ‘special’. She shared that South Africa needs to learn and draw examples from areas such as Shanghai in China which setup a special economic zone with different rules for investment so multi-national companies could setup factories. “We [CDE] are really saying that the major challenge in South Africa today is unemployment and we need to think hard about how we can change that reality and at the moment these special economic zones cost a lot of money and are basically subsidised infrastructure and office parks, and this is not really making a good contribution to South Africa’s economic development and we should try out a policy reform zone,” she explained.
