MEXICO’S MARKET REFORMS: PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES

A high level conversation with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, held in Johannesburg, and co-hosted by the Mexican ambassador and the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE), discussed the broad package of reforms that Mexico’s President, Peña Nieto, has successfully put together – supported by all the major political parties – which is contributing to Mexico’s rise to become the fourth largest economy in the Americas. This report summarises the discussion on Mexico’s experience providing pointers for South Africa on the necessity for a political coalition behind a reform package as well as how another developing country is dealing with education and labour market reform.
